WORCESTER: Rev. Richard P. Hokanson, Jr., 64, of Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, formerly serving in the Worcester Diocese, died at his home on Monday, April 29, 2013, after a brief illness. He leaves a sister, Janice E. Baronoski of Leicester; a brother, Stephen M. Hokanson of Worcester; three nieces, Krissi Forgues and her husband Mark of Auburn, Bethe Kichula and her husband Peter of Shrewsbury, Rebecca Baronoski of Princeton; four great nephews, Jay and David Forgues of Auburn; Owen and Samuel Kichula of Shrewsbury; two cousins, Marcia McGlynn and her husband Lenny of Holden, Marilyn Roy of Boylston; and his beloved dog Maggie. He was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late Richard P. and Lucile E. (Syner) Hokanson and graduated from St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury. He also graduated from St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, CT and St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, MD. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1974 at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Worcester. Fr. Hokanson served at several parishes in the Worcester Diocese including St. Louis in Webster, St. Mary’s in Southbridge, St. Luke’s in Westborough, St. Catherine of Sweden, St. Bernard’s and St. Joseph’s, all in Worcester. He had also served as a member of the faculty at St. Peter-Marian Central Catholic High School. In 1991 he moved to the Diocese of Charlotte, NC where he served as pastor of St. Joseph’s Church in Newton and later at Queen of the Apostles Church in Belmont. In 2009 he became Chaplain at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base near Goldsboro while also assisting at several parishes in eastern Gaston County. He enjoyed both classical and organ music and will be fondly remembered by many for his kindness, story telling and acerbic wit. CALLING HOURS will be from 4 to 7 P.M. on THURSDAY, MAY 9 in KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 154 Lincoln St., Worcester. A FUNERAL MASS will be held at 10 A.M. on FRIDAY, MAY 10 in OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY CHURCH, 7 Church St., Spencer, MA. (Please go directly to the church.) WORCESTER: Ruth E. (Brigham) Butterfield, 102, a resident of Moody, ME, died Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Ichabod Washburn Hospice Residence in Worcester. Her husband, Eliot G. Butterfield died in 1990.
She leaves her caregiver, Cynthia Perry of Auburn; five nephews, Bruce, Wayne, Mark, Scott and Peter Butterfield; many friends in Maine and several cousins. She was born June 14, 1910 in Worcester, daughter of the late Walter C. and Elizabeth (Clouthier) Brigham and was a graduate of Becker College.
Ruth was a laboratory worker for the New Hampshire Racing Commission where she worked for many years until she retired. She was a member of the New Hampshire State Employees Association Local # 1984. Throughout her life she enjoyed golf, skating, snow skiing, boating and was an avid bridge player. She and her husband enjoyed extensive traveling during his military career and in retirement.
A graveside service was held at the convenience of the family in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton, MA. There were no calling hours.

Fabiola E. (Zuidema) Zuidema, 86, of Auburn died Saturday, August 3rd 2013 in the Life Care Center of Auburn. Her husband of 31 years, Peter Zuidema died in 2009. She leaves three step-sons, Wayne P. Zuidema, Albert D. Zuidema and Gary D. Zuidema; a brother, Edmorse W. Zuidema of CA; a sister, Doris Garand; two grandchildren, Stephanie and Mandy; five great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews including Bryan Stewart and Lynn Conrad. She was predeceased by a daughter, Janet L. Zuidema who died in 2001; a step-son, Gus Zuidema; a brother, Kenneth A. Zuidema and a sister, Blanche Stewart.
She was born in Millbury, the daughter of Peter and Exelina D. (Cofske) Zuidema. Fabiola worked at S & D and Sons for 12 years as a textile worker and winder. She loved playing the organ and camping. Mrs. Zuidema was a great care giver and enjoyed taking care of Pete while he was sick.

Naomi Pearl (Brundage) Read, 87, of Auburn, died suddenly at her home on Sunday, September 1, 2013. She was the beloved wife of Robert W. Read Sr. who died in 2007.

Born in Cambridge on August 14, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Gilmour and Luty (Mitchell) Brundage. Mrs. Read was a resident of Auburn for the past year and formerly resided in Townsend and Gardner.

She was a graduate of Medway High School and the former Burdett School of Business in Boston.

Before her retirement, she worked at the former Cushing Hospital in Framingham for many years.

Mrs. Read was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Rosalie Rebekah Lodge in Medway. She was an avid stamp collector and enjoyed doing puzzles and playing on her computer. She also loved socializing with her friends.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia J. Read and Karen Bernhardt of Ashby and Janice Read Nowicki and her husband Stephen of Auburn, a son Robert W. Read Jr. and his wife Susan of Danvers, five grandchildren, Louis Capozzi and his wife Courtney, Matthew Capozzi and his wife Jenna, Allison Read, Michael Nowicki and his wife Alison and Daniel Nowicki, three great-grandchildren and a brother Gilmour Brundage Jr. of Buxton, ME.

She was the sister of the late James and Edwin Brundage.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Friday, September 6 at 11a.m. in the Ginley Crowley Funeral Home, 3 Barber St. in Medway (www.ginleyfuneralhomes.com).

Burial will take place in Oakland Cemetery in Medway at a later date.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 5 – 8 p.m.

AUBURN; Clarence L. Smith, Jr. 91, most recently of The Lodge on Eddy Pond, 669 Washington St., died peacefully, Friday, Sept. 20 at his son’s home in Danielson, Ct.

He was the husband of Mary (Sanderson) Smith who died in 2012. He leaves a son David A. Smith and his wife Carole of Danielson, three grandchildren Dawn M. Grassi and her husband Joseph of Cambridge, Stephen R. Smith and his wife Natalie of Paxton and Amy L. Smith of Danielson, 10 great grandchildren Anthony & Stephanie Grassi, Jordan, Megan & Addison Smith, Abigail & Jon-Patrick Scott, Haley, Rachel & Russell Farnsworth, several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a brother George W. Smith and a sister Bessie Smith.

Clarence was a truck driver for 30 years, working for Paul Dubrey trucking and most recently Red Star before retiring in 1984.

Born in Warren, he was the son of Clarence L. and Gracie (Rice) Smith, Sr. and lived in No. Attleboro, Leicester and Zephyrhills, Fl. He proudly served his country in the Merchant Marine during WWII.

He was a Past Master & Life member of the Spencer Lodge of Masons AF & AM, the Aletha Grotto Shriners in Worcester, and Chapter Advisor of the Spencer Order of DeMolay. He was a former member of the Leicester Federated Church where he was a longtime Deacon.

A Memorial Service for Clarence will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 11a.m. in the First Congregational Church of Leicester, 2 Washburn Sq., Leicester. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 516 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104. Auburn – Merle E. Harmon, 51, of Auburn passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, September 22 after being stricken ill.

Merle is survived by his mother, Ethel (Mansfield) Girardin of Auburn; two brothers, William Girardin of Auburn and Arthur Girardin of Barre, MA; 5 sisters, Grace Healy of Leicester, Maryann Pease of Hardwick, MA, Lori Rao of North Oxford, Linda Menard of North Brookfield and Sandra Glanville of Worcester; his longtime companion, Tina LaFlash of Millbury and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Harmon was born in Portland, Maine and is predeceased by his stepfather Arthur Girardin. He is a graduate of Baypath Vocational School and worked for TCI Tire Center Company.

Merle enjoyed fishing, gardening, doing crossword puzzles and spending time in his “Man Cave”

E. Susann (McCarthy) McGurn, 73, of Auburn died Saturday, October 5th in St. Vincent Hospital. She leaves her companion of many years, Donald Miglionico; two sons, Jay Novack and his wife, Donna of Charlton and Shawn McGurn of Auburn; two daughters, Traci Stuart of Auburn and Kelli Riel of Worcester; a brother, David McCarthy of Greenfield; a sister, Debi More of Arizona; seven grandchildren, Ryan Novack, Tyler Stuart, Kayli McGurn, Emily Novack, Shane Riel, Connor Novack and Kyle Riel and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves her beloved dogs, Minni and Suzi. Ms. McGurn was predeceased by a grandchild, Angel Stuart.
She was born in Greenfield the daughter of Paul and Ruth (Phelps) McCarthy. Susann was the office manager and secretary for Manning Chiropractic for many years.

Edward F. Kozlowski, 85, of Auburn, died Sunday, October 27th at home surrounded by his family. He leaves his wife of 63 years, Virginia V. (Steinmetz) Kozlowski; his son, Dennis Kozlowski of Auburn; a sister, Irene Dell’Olio of Shrewsbury; 4 grandchildren and a great grandchild. He was predeceased by a brother, Henry Kozlowski and a sister, Julia Ciejka.
He was born in Shrewsbury the son of Anthony and Michaline (Berowicz) Kozlowski. Edward worked for 22 years at Worcester Town Talk as a bread cutter and wrapper and then worked for the former Norton Company for 20 years in various departments, retiring in 1993.

Bourbeau of Worcester; three daughters, Joan D. Troy of Hardy, VA, Gail I. Sealey of Worcester and Gayle A. DeLisle of Millbury; 23 grandchildren; 74 great grandchildren; 7 great great granchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Paul E. Bourbeau; two daughters, Janice M. Prince and Shirley A. Norcross and three brothers, J. Edward Murray, Henry Murray and Walter Murray.
She was born in Worcester the daughter of Telesphore and Olympe (Gallant) Murray and graduated from Auburn High School. She worked at Mechanics National Bank. She was a loving parent to 45 foster children and was a member of North American Martyrs Church.
Her funeral is Saturday, November 9th from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, Worcester with a Mass at 11:00 AM in North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Drive. AUBURN-Carol Wamback Nicholas of Auburn, died Monday November 18, 2013, in the Ichabod Washburn House in Worcester after a brief illness. She was 74.
Carol leaves her beloved husband of 42 years, John Nicholas; daughters, Kristen Nicholas and Courtney Maleakas and her husband, Chuck; cousins and nephews; and her devoted cat, Katia.
Carol was born in Worcester. She was the daughter of the late Stephen Daniel Theodore and Marion Rachel Eliza (Sperry) Wamback. She was educated in Worcester schools and graduated from Commerce High School.
Carol worked for Imperial Distributors, and previously, the former Paul Revere Insurance Co. where she was the first woman in the city of Worcester to use a computer.
Carol was a funny lady who wrote humorous poems for many friends and family members. She loved to bake, and her famous Christmas cookies will be tough to replicate, though her daughters will certainly try. An avid shopper, she loved a good bargain and never missed a sale. Mostly, it will be impossible to remember her without remembering her sweetness, her kindness, her unpretentious simplicity, and her love for her family.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home 91 Central Street, in Auburn from 10AM to 12PM Saturday November 23, 2013. A celebration of Carol’s life will be held at 12 Noon following visiting hours.

AUBURN-Ronald L. Ferland 76 of Franklin, formerly of Hyannis and Auburn, died Tuesday, November 26, at UMASS Memorial Hospital after a short period of declining health.
He leaves his wife Carol (Hornig) Ferland and their children: Phillip E. Ferland and his wife Fay of Dudley, Mark A. Ferland and his wife Tammy of Franklin, Jeanne C. Rogan and her husband William of Sicklerville, NJ and Michelle Lowell of Davenport, IA.
He leaves 9 grandchildren and a great grandson. He leaves a sister, Donna M. Russell of Gardner, one nephew and two nieces.
He was born in Worcester. He was the son of the late Phillip J. and Lillian S. (Fassett) Ferland. He was a graduate of Worcester Boys Trade.
Mr. Ferland served his country in the US Navy as a member of the Seabees from 1956-1959.
After the service, Ronald worked for the New England Power Service Co. for 32 years before retiring.
Ron was a bow hunter, juried watercolor artist and wood carver. He was an avid reader and traveler. He was a member of the Cape Cod Art Association.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Ron’s family from 11AM to 12PM, Saturday, January 18th. A memorial service will follow at noon in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St. Auburn. Burial with military honors in Bourne National Cemetery will be held privately.

AUBURN: John J. “Dinty” Moore, 84, formerly of Oakland Dr., died Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Worcester Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, 119 Providence St., after a long illness. His wife of 56 years, Julia M. “Sue” (Morelly) Moore, died January 13, 2013.
He leaves a son, Michael J. Moore and his wife Camille of Palm Desert, CA; a sister, Maureen Shedd of Vero Beach, FL; 3 grandchildren, Caroline, Connor and Aidan; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Another son, Paul P. Moore, died in 1969. He was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late John F. and Elizabeth J. (Walsh) Moore and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War earning two Bronze Stars. He lived in Auburn more than 50 years.
John worked as a truck driver for 12 years with J&J Corrugated Company until he retired in 1988. He previously drove for 15 years with N.Y. Worcester Express – Eastern Freightways. He was a member of North American Martyrs Church, Teamsters Local Union #170 and its Retirement Club, Charles F. Minney VFW Post 3329 in Millbury, Chester P. Tuttle American Legion Post No. 279 in Auburn, and the Auburn Elks Lodge No. 2118 where he once served as a Trustee. He had also been an active volunteer for many years with the American Red Cross Blood Drives.
A CALLING HOUR will be held from 9 A.M. to 10:15 A.M. on MONDAY, DEC. 9 at KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 154 Lincoln St., in Worcester, followed by A FUNERAL MASS at 11 A.M. in NORTH AMERICAN MARTYRS CHURCH, 8 Wyoma Dr., in Auburn. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Worcester.

June was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Egil and Catherine (Kelley) Andersen. She graduated from Auburn High School in 1955 and worked as a graphic artist for the Milton Bradley Company and also for the Rand Whitney Company.

Ms. Andersen led a very active life, she enjoyed, skiing, playing tennis and golfing. June was a member of the Rosarian Society and enjoyed traveling.

Virginia M. “Bunny” Corey, 81, of Englewood, FL, formerly of Shrewsbury, MA, died at her home with family surrounding her.

She leaves 6 children Barbara J. Walker of Englewood, FL, with whom she lived, James J. Corey and his wife, Donna of Cranston, RI, Kathleen E. Hopkins of Portsmouth, RI, Laurene T. Corey of Worcester, MA, Margaret E. Gould of Whitinsville, MA and Diane C. Tonelli and her husband, Richard of North Grafton, MA. She leaves a brother Robert Bourgeois and his wife, Patricia of Spencer, MA, a brother-in-law Henry Perron of Leicester, MA, 14 grandchildren, 6 step-grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 9 step-great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews and three very close friends, Evelyn, Nancy and Gert.

She was predeceased by her parents, John B. and Anna E. (O’Keefe) Bourgeois; a daughter, Mary Corey; a brother John Bourgeois, sisters, Margaret Perron, and Elizabeth Dyer; and sons-in-laws Richard Walker and Peter Hopkins.

She attended St. Paul’s Elementary School and graduated South High School, Worcester MA in 1950. She moved to Shrewsbury in 1956 and resided there until moving to Englewood, FL in 2008. Virginia graduated cum laude from Worcester State College in 1972 with a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education. She taught at St. Mary’s Parochial School in Shrewsbury, MA for nine years teaching math, science and social studies.

She worked for GC services from 1980 until1984 when she left the business workforce to collaborate with her daughter at Barbara’s Cake Emporium in Westborough, MA. In 1987, she went to work for GMAC in Westborough, MA, until her retirement.

Virginia was a member of St. Mary’s Parish in Shrewsbury, MA since she first moved to Shrewsbury. She was active in the religious sorority ‘Daughters of Isabella,’ serving as an officer, a regent and a state regent. She was a member of the Shrewsbury chapter of the Massachusetts Democratic Committee, serving as delegate on both the state and national level. She was a member of St. Mary’s ‘Jet Set’ Group, the Shrewsbury Women’s Club and a local member of the Red Hat Society.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Virginia’s family on Saturday, January 25, 2014 from 8:30- 9:30 AM in the Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 648 Main St., Shrewsbury. A funeral Mass celebrating Virginia’s life will follow in Saint Mary’s Church, 640 Main St, Shrewsbury at 10 AM. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Donna L. (MacIlvane) Holbrook, 73, of Shrewsbury died Tuesday, January 21, 2014 in her home.

Her husband of 16 years, Ellsworth Holbrook died in 2011. She leaves her two children, Michelle A. Johnson of Cheshire, CT, and Robert D. Moody and his wife, Kelly J. Moody of Shrewsbury; five grandchildren, Matthew Moody- Lee of Quincy, Brett M. Moody and Michael E. McKay both of Shrewsbury, Carl A. Johnson of Holden and Ralph L. Johnson, Jr., of Worcester; a brother, Donald H. MacIlvane, Jr and his wife, Marilyn of Northbridge; one niece, Erin Strazzulla and her husband, Christopher, and their children, Bentley and Grace.

Donna was born in Worcester and raised in Shrewsbury, daughter of the late Donald and Rita (Prunier) MacIlvane. She graduated from Shrewsbury High School in 1958. She later attended the former Salter Secretarial School in Worcester.

She started her working career as a Secretary for the David Clarke Company in Worcester and ended her career as a dining room manager for Golden Pond Assisted Living in Hopkinton.

Donna had a big heart and was loved by all who knew her.

Her funeral will follow with a funeral Mass celebrating her life at 11 AM in Saint Anne’s Church , 130 Boston Turnpike, Shrewsbury . Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Shrewsbury.

Elizabeth A. “Betty” (Jackman) Kruczek, 81, of Auburn, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, January 29th. She lived in Auburn for 60 years. Her husband of 50 years, Henry R. “Hank” Kruczek, died in 2002. She leaves two sons, Ronald of Auburn, with whom she lived and Charles and his wife Paula of Paxton; a daughter, Kathleen Soucie and her husband Kevin of East Brookfield. Her twelve grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren gave her great pleasure and pride. She was predeceased by her daughter, Elizabeth Ann Moreau and her brother Charles Jackman.
She was born in Worcester, the daughter of Charles A. and Elizabeth A. (Tunstall) Jackman and graduated from South High School and Sargent College/Boston University.
Mrs. K. was an Athletic Director, Administrator, faculty member, and teacher at Fitchburg State College for 35 years. In 1995, she received the Corbett Award for Top Athletic Administrator in the country. She was a member of the NCAA Executive Committee for many years. Mrs. K, was the Executive Director for Marion’s Camp for Girls and the Clara Barton Camp for diabetic girls for a number of years.
She took great joy in family gatherings for holidays, birthdays, and summer fun. Betty and Hank enjoyed traveling in both the United States and abroad. They especially liked cities with casinos; together they enjoyed life. A loving mother, grandmother, wife, daughter, and friend, we were blessed to have known her and to have been loved by her. Elizabeth lived a “Wonderful Life.”
Funeral services, under the direction of O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue, Worcester, will be private.

AUBURN-Robert T. Mills, 65 of Auburn, formerly of Westborough, MA and New York, died Tuesday in St. Vincent’s Hospital after a period of declining health. His wife Lynn Marie (Forgea) Mills died in 2005. He is survived by his son Brent A. LeBeau, of Pittsfield, a brother Peter Mills and wife Diane of New York, a sister Judy Fiumarello and husband Tom of Poughkeepsie, New York, a nephew Chris Mills and niece Kelly Mills, also of New York, his brother in-law George H. Forgea, and his wife Deborah, of North Adams, a nephew Tyler G. Forgea of Saco, ME. He was born in Kingstown, New York; he was the son of the late Thomas Mills and Mary (Ruskie) Mills. Bob was employed by Verizon for nearly 30 years where he held numerous titles, including Instructor and also Course Developer, retiring in 2003. Bob’s enjoyments included playing golf, cribbage, and reading, spending time with friends and driving his 1962 Cadillac. Bob was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Vietnam Veterans of America. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours from 3-5 PM Sunday February16th in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central Street, Auburn. His funeral will be held Monday from the funeral home, with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Saint Joseph’s Church, 194 Oxford Street, Auburn. LaRochelle, Jr. and Paula (Powers) LaRochelle of Auburn; a sister, Kimberly Ann O’Brien and her husband, Donald of Worcester; his aunt, Pauline LaRochelle of Southbridge as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was born in Auburn and graduated from Auburn High School. Paul enjoyed his time spent with family while vacationing in Maine. He loved pop culture and music. AUBURN-Robert Leo Gedenberg, 84, of Auburn a retired Diesel Mechanic died Monday February 24 in his home after a brief illness. He leaves his wife Blanche (Drake) Gedenberg of Auburn, a son David and his companion Brenda of Auburn, a daughter Dorine Donnelly, and her husband Richard, of Worcester, and a sister Florence Wynn of FL, 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a daughter Diane Hoff in 2011 Robert was born in Greenville, New Hampshire. He was the son of the late John and Blanche (Porter) Gedenberg. Robert was a proud veteran of the US Navy; he served the US in the Korean War. Mr. Gedenberg worked as a diesel mechanic for T&T Red Star Express in Shrewsbury for many years. Robert was an avid outdoorsman; he particularly enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He was a member of the Chester P. Tuttle Post, #279 American Legion in Auburn, the Canal Sportsman’s Club in Bourne, the Orange Sportsman’s Club. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours from 4-7 PM Friday February 28, 2014 in the Britton-Wallace Funeral Home, 91 Central St. in Auburn. His funeral will be held in the funeral home at 10 AM Saturday March 1. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery. Fullen; her children, Cheryl A. Strzelewicz and her husband, John of Sutton, Christine Collotta and her husband, Fred of Shrewsbury and Charlene Bell and her husband, Mark of Redmond, Washington; step children, Thomas B. Fullen and his wife, Sarah of Leominster, Margaret M. Fullen Smith of California, Maureen F. McGrath and her husband Thomas of Charlton, Cynthia M. Fullen of Auburn, Diane G. Fullen of Worcester, Michael J. Fullen and his wife, Therese of N. Oxford and John D. Fullen and his wife, Barbara of Millbury; many grandchildren and great grandchildren and nieces and nephews : three sisters, Sandra Plante of Fall River, Shirley Quattrucci of Spencer and Pauline Pinkham of Oxford. She was predeceased by her first husband, William Gervais; a brother, Albert LaPrade; sister, Nancy Goodwin, and son in law, George Smith. Jackie was born and raised in Worcester, daughter of the late Albert and Dorothy (Lemoine) LaPrade. She graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester. She owned and operated Clamphams Transmissions in Auburn for several years before she retired. In her retirement years she enjoyed to travel.
